Mr. & Dr. is a photobook aimed for children and youngsters that explores the notion of the unknown through images and text.

This photobook is an appropriation of a classic horror story, The strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson that challenges the overriding illustrative relation between text and images in books for children. Photographs are unexpected, dark, ambiguous and create a vague yet fraught relation with the words that rejects fixed definitions.

Mr. & Dr. is a journey, through words and images, to the unimaginable, to what we do not understand and consequently, we fear.

Mr. & Dr. es un fotolibro dirigido a niños y jóvenes que explora la noción de lo desconocido a través de imágenes y texto.

Este fotolibro es una apropiación de una historia clásica de terror, El extraño caso del Dr. Jekyll y el Mr. Hyde, de Robert Louis Stevenson, que desafía la predominante relación ilustrativa entre el texto y las imágenes en los libros para niños. Las fotografías son oscuras, inesperadas, ambiguas y crean una relación vaga pero tensa con las palabras, que rechaza definiciones fijas.

Mr. & Dr. es un viaje, a través de palabras e imágenes, a lo inimaginable, a lo que no entendemos y, por consiguiente, tememos.

Mariela Sancari was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1976. She lives and works in Mexico City since 1997.

Her work revolves around identity and memory and the way both are mingled and affected by each other. She examines the thin and elusive line dividing memories and fiction.

She has received numerous awards for her work: selected by curator Susan Bright to be included in the 2015 Ones to Watch issue of BJP Magazine, she was also named one of the Discoveries of the Meeting Place of FotoFest 2014 Biennal. Winner of the VI Bienal Nacional de Artes Visuales Yucatan 2013 and PHotoEspaña Descubrimientos Prize 2014, her work was selected for the XVI Bienal de Fotografía from Centro de la Imagen and received an Honorable Mention in XI Bienal Monterrey FEMSA, with her series Moisés.  She received an Honorable Mention in the Official Selection Artemergente National Monterrey Biennale 2012 with her series The two headed horse.

Her first book Moisés was selected by several curators and reviewers, such as Sean O’Hagan, Tim Clark, Erik Kessels, Jörg Colberg, Larissa Leclair, Yumi Goto and Colin Pantall, among others, as one of the Best Photobooks published in 2015.

Adolfo Córdova was born in Veracruz, México in 1983.

Journalist, writer and researcher based in Mexico City. He owns a Masters degree in Books and Literature for Children and Youngsters from Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona.

He is a visiting professor at UNAM and Universidad Iberoamericana and was awarded a research residency at the International Youth Library in Munich, Germany and University of Castilla-La Mancha in Cuenca, Spain during 2017.

His most recent book for children “The White Dragon and Other Forgotten Characters,” edited by Fondo de Cultura Económica in México, earned him the Juan de la Cabada National Fine Arts Award for Children’s Stories.

Mariela Sancari nació en Buenos Aires, Argentina en 1976. Vive y trabaja en la Ciudad de México desde 1997.

Su trabajo gira en torno a la identidad y la memoria. Examina las relaciones personales vinculadas con la memoria y la delgada y esquiva línea que separa los recuerdos y la ficción.

Ha recibido numerosos reconocimientos: seleccionada por la curadora Susan Bright para el número 2015 Ones to Watch de la revista BJP, también fue nombrada uno de los Discoveries of the Meeting Place de FotoFest 2014. Profesor invitado en la UNAM y en la Universidad Iberoamericana y, durante 2017, investigador residente de la Biblioteca Internacional de la Juventud de Munich, Alemania y de la Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha en Cuenca, España.

Su más reciente libro para niños “El dragón blanco y otros personales olvidados”, editado por el Fondo de Cultura Económica, lo hizo merecedor del Premio Nacional Bellas Artes de Cuento Infantil Juan de la Cabada.
